napari 0.4.15¶
Note
These are preliminary release notes until 0.4.15 is released. Currently this is slated to occur on 2022-03-08.
We’re happy to announce the release of napari 0.4.15! napari is a fast, interactive, multi-dimensional image viewer for Python. It’s designed for browsing, annotating, and analyzing large multi-dimensional images. It’s built on top of Qt (for the GUI), vispy (for performant GPU-based rendering), and the scientific Python stack (numpy, scipy).
Following NumPy’s NEP-29 deprecation policy, this release drops support for Python 3.7, which enables us to simplify many code paths. From 0.4.15, napari supports Python 3.8, 3.9, and 3.10.

Highlights¶
This release is focused on documentation improvements and bug fixes, with few changes to napari’s API. The napari documentation is now entirely contained, built, and deployed from the napari repository (#4047, #4147, #4154, #4176, #4183). This and ongoing work will make it easier for the community to contribute documentation to the project and help others use napari. We have a new documentation contributing guide to help community members contribute documentation pages.
Our volume display layers (Image
and Labels
) have gained a new slicing
plane mode and user interface to view slices of the data embedded within a
larger volume (#3759). This had been previously available as an experimental
API, and is now much improved, with new user interface controls. See the
volume plane rendering
example for details.
We have added completely optional, opt-in error reporting via the package napari-error-reporter. If users install this third-party package, they will be presented with a dialog asking whether to opt-in to report errors to select napari core developers, which will help us prioritise and fix bugs that we might otherwise miss. See the project’s README for details.
Finally, we have made some updates to how our application works. We now provide a bundle based on conda, which should help with plugin installation on different platforms (#3555). Additionally, the plugin listing inside the app is now based on the napari hub API, which allows plugin authors to distribute plugins on PyPI but have them not be listed in the app (#4074).
